Teacher Tools - Build Your Own Assignments
- 1. Why use video clips OUTSIDE the classroom?
Although using rich media (audio and video) is very effective inside the classroom, integrated with lecture and case study materials, it has an equally important role outside the classroom. Students today live in a word of rich media. When they get news, look for entertainment, search for information, rich media is everywhere. With a laptop in their backpack and an iPod in their jeans pocket, students are rich media ready!
- 2. Creating Assignments with eClips.
There are many ways you can use eClips in assignments. Here are just a few examples:
- Choose the Themes section of eClips and browse for a specific topic that fits with what you are teaching. Have students watch the clips in that theme and write a short paper or answer some questions. For more details, download Idea Bank 01.
- Using eClips to Wake up Students in Class. For more details, download Idea Bank 02.
- Use the business pitches available in eClips to illustrate how to present a business idea in person to an investor. For more details, download Idea Bank 03
- Create a Listening List and share it with your students. For more details, download Idea Bank 04
- Create a mini-course for students preparing for Business Plan Contests. For more details, download Idea Bank 05
- Write an assignment that combines current articles or other written materials with clips from the collection. If your campus supports Blackboard (BB), this can be done by creating a BB Learning Unit involving both text materials and links to eClips. Each clip has an associated url, so you can simply have links embedded in the Learning Unit at the point at which you want students to view a particular clip. Students get logged-in to eClips before starting the Blackboard Assignment. The BB Learning unit also allows you to insert quizzes or short answer-type questions or even surveys for assessment purposes. For more details, download Idea Bank 06
- 3. Podcasts - coming soon
If you are interested in podcasting to your students, contact me at dhs4@cornell.edu. We are creating audio files that can be used for podcasting, but they are not yet available on our website. However, we are interested in partnering with others to create such materials.
